A set of taps – let’s screw in a new thread!

Sets of taps and dies save us in such situations when we need to create a thread. Of course, today this is an attribute of mechanical engineering, and in most cases these operations are mechanized, but craftsmen at home sometimes have such work. Before buy taps and dies you should familiarize yourself with some of the characteristics of this device.

Lerki and taps – how to distinguish?
The thread must be cut in several designs, external and internal. This requires different tools, but the principles of their operation are very similar. Perhaps many of you have heard somewhere the terms “lurkers”, “taps”, “dies”, etc. These are just devices that help accomplish this task. The difference here is quite simple, if you do not delve into the structure and classification of each device. We will try to point them out in a few sentences so as not to confuse you.
Lanyards cut and create external threads, that is, the upper part of a product, for example, a pipe. Of course, this is done at the factory, but if you suddenly decide to renovate your home and cut a pipe, this is the tool that will help you create a new thread. Today these two names are identified and separated previously: Lerkoy was considered a device not related to vegetables, and was considered as a collapsible and adjustable member; The lathe was considered a tool with which one could create better carvings; and the Lerka was considered a tool with which one could create a new carving.

Taps are used to form twisted connections within a part or workpiece. Many people ask to describe the tool, imagining a regular screw with a special way of cutting teeth and an alternative groove. At one end the device is attached to a machine (for mechanical cutting) or a groove (for manual cutting); this place is called the shank. The other end of the tap is inserted into the hole and rotated. As it moves, it forms a carving.
Tap sizes or what to consider when working?
Most devices are mechanical taps because the work done by these tools can be serial. This means that they can be used in both mechanical and domestic applications. In addition, it is easy to assume that only very durable materials can cope with such a volume of work. Therefore, they are made of carbide so that wear is minimal or rapid, and the process is faster and easier.
To obtain high-quality cutting, it is recommended to select the size of the tap for the hole. If it is necessary to create a thread with a larger diameter, then several sizes should be used in succession to achieve the best effect. In most cases – two or three. If you are working with softer materials, you will have to “stretch out” the pleasure of working with five taps. If there are no holes at all, use a drill first. Markers come into play later. In addition, if the workpiece is made of metal, the drill bit must also be very durable.
It is worth choosing the profile of the cutting tool carefully, since it determines what will go into the hole.
Do not confuse taps for through and blind holes, because if chosen incorrectly, this part will be rejected. Also, if you don’t want to use a universal threading tool purchased with a machine or hand tap, make sure it is suitable for the fastener. Thread forming tips may not be suitable, and due to deformation of the plastic, rolling may be used where grooves are formed. This also requires a special tap.
A set of taps – the pros and cons of such a tool
In theory, everything seems simple to work with tons, but this is not entirely true. Creating a more detailed process is quite an expensive undertaking in terms of physical preparation, especially if you are inclined to work manually. After all, cutting metal is not easy, it involves a huge frictional force, and the chips when removed are not as pliable as wooden products. They are also very stable when exiting the groove. Due to the presence of grooves in the faucet body, the strength of the body is somewhat reduced, and such devices often break, especially when using thin sizes.
However, everything is not so depressing, because the taps have already been used before and did not disappear from the tool in vain. It is not complicated in itself, it is easy to make and use. You don’t need to think long about how to use it and where to modify it. Thread accuracy is very high, and for very critical parts it can be increased by improving the quality of the tap itself. This is easier than creating a complex device to control the cutting process itself. Having created a more perfect tap, you can already count on the same perfect thread.

Machine-hand taps and other types of devices
Of course, some types of taps have their own characteristics, but if you try to explain the general principles of operation of the device, it looks something like this. Firstly, there is a fence part. It looks like a drill tip with feathers, followed by threads that act as a sizing component. The latter is characterized by the number of feathers and teeth, at the top of which there is also a groove from which the chips are removed. It all ends at the shank where the fastener is formed. Depending on the design and purpose, most taps can be divided into hand, machine and machine-brown (in this case, the classification criteria are easy to determine).
Manual options are also called metalworking. They are usually found in sets; they are not sold individually. This is not a rigid tool and has only class 4 precision. Designed for machine use, these attachments have a higher accuracy class and are used for turning, aggregates and excavators. In most cases, metric taps create M2-M4 threads, but in some cases, inch taps are also used to create K-type (taper) threads. All of them are made from durable grade of steel, standardized in size and have the best tan engraving.
They also differ in warehouses and special options. We will dwell on this in more detail. The first type speaks for itself; threads are formed using nuts. Such devices are used in machines that process a large number of nuts at once and cut a large number of round washers lined up one after another. Taps calibrate the die thread if it becomes unusable. However, the group of special species is very wide. Since it is determined by the profile and shape of the thread that they can cut, in this group you can find round profiles, trapezoidal shapes, etc. There are conical, tube, collective, adjustable, etc. taps.

Particular attention is paid to. Here the teeth are staggered relative to each other, which eliminates jamming due to insufficient camber. For particularly heavy-duty work, taps with a shortened flute are required. This is because they are stronger than others. Products with threaded grooves allow better use of the tip, which is important when working in blind holes. With the help of stepped and extended cutters, several cutting modes can be realized. Bell-type taps can be used to create relatively large threads (up to 40 cm).
Conical taps are characterized by the absence of a catalytic section, the length of which is equal to the length of the thread. But the sailboat tap is completely out of the general range of these tools. The point is that it is located differently. The shank moves in front of the cutting part. This means that it pulls the entire body of this device along with it. It is very functional and can cut threads into profiles, lengths and steps. These taps come in left and right hand versions. This means that it rotates in different directions and creates corresponding threads.
