Getting Rid of Under-Eye Bags: Cosmetology and Home Remedies

getting Rid of Under-Eye Bags

Bags under the eyes are caused by a variety of factors, one of which is considered to be genetic.

Over the years, subcutaneous fat shifts, its volume decreases, and the skin thins. Whereas blood vessels and tissues under the eyes were previously “hidden” by thick skin and a layer of subcutaneous fat, with age, these vessels and tissues begin to “show through” and appear blue or dark.

Often, with an unhealthy lifestyle, these reactions are accompanied by an accumulation of biological fluids in the suborbital area, which already threatens the appearance of bags.

Look at how many blood vessels there are in this area:

almost always, “dents” in the facial surface are observed in this area, which also appear due to age-related changes.

Similarly, to conceal this flaw, it is necessary to either reduce the skin’s transparency or restore the “layer” between the skin and the underlying tissues and blood vessels. By lifting the skin’s contour in the under-eye area by just 1–2 mm, you can achieve a striking visual result. And using hyaluronic acid-based products, which attract water and even have a temporary whitening effect, will deliver 100% results!

Absolutely everyone wants to get rid of under-eye bags at home. Let’s think about it.

Do home compresses and other remedies help get rid of under-eye bags? No. They don’t help.

A healthy lifestyle can help with bruises and dark circles. But when it comes to bags, they don’t help. If you’ve heard about some “magic ointment” somewhere—just so you know, that’s advertising.

For bruises and dark circles, you should use products containing low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, whose molecules are actually capable of penetrating the skin. This should help moisturize the area and partially eliminate the problem. Why only partially? Because the concentration of hyaluronic acid in the cream is low, and a significant portion of it will remain on the surface. Moreover, creams with low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid are produced only by fairly large cosmetics companies, and the cost of these products reflects that.

Not all hyaluronic acid penetrates the skin!

For under-eye bags, you need to correct the contour of the under-eye area: fill in the groove; you can’t achieve this with creams or “patches.”

Under-eye bags are a problem caused by the formation of fatty deposits under the skin of the lower eyelid or an excessive accumulation of bodily fluids in the soft tissues of the face.

Under-eye bags: How to get rid of them at home.

Specialized aesthetic medicine offers a wide range of methods for correcting this issue.

Is it possible to quickly get rid of under-eye bags?

Let’s start with the basics— how to effectively remove dark circles without special cosmetic, and sometimes even surgical, procedures. The only way to visually conceal this aesthetic flaw is with concealer creams and similar makeup techniques.

Compresses and massages can hide the problem for up to fifteen minutes. After that, it reappears.

If you’re not ready to visit a professional cosmetologist or plastic surgeon today, try to get rid of under-eye bags at home. We’ve prepared an overview of well-known remedies for this flaw.

However, you must realize that only consistent treatment over a set period of time will yield positive results.

etiological therapy for under-eye issues

Once you know the specific cause of your under-eye bags, it will be much easier to address this cosmetic concern.

Undergo a comprehensive medical examination. Find out if you have any issues with your heart, kidneys, or endocrine system. If a specialist diagnoses any conditions, you must begin treatment—only then will you have a chance to correct the visible imperfections on your face.

If you neglect treatment, not only will you fail to address the visual changes in your lower eyelids, but you will also allow the condition to “progress” unchecked.

Focus on your lifestyle:

  • Improve your diet by eliminating excess smoked and pickled foods from your menu;
  • Maintain a regular sleep schedule and get at least 7–8 hours of sleep;
  • Try to sleep on your back and avoid sleeping on your stomach;
  • Drink at least 1.5–2 liters of fluids per day;
  • Quit smoking;
  • Avoid both occasional and chronic alcohol abuse;
  • Take more walks in the fresh air;
  • Do morning exercises;
  • Limit the amount of time you spend working at a computer;
  • Avoid conflict and stressful situations;
  • Reduce your time in the sun and don’t overuse tanning beds;
  • Go through your makeup bag—review your skincare and makeup products, discard any expired or low-quality cosmetics, and consult a dermatologist to select an effective at-home skincare routine.

Sometimes, following these simple and helpful tips can help you visibly reduce under-eye bags on your own within 2–3 weeks.

By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you’ll be amazed at how much your overall mood improves and how quickly the visible signs you associated with aging and other uncontrollable factors can disappear.

Cosmetics

The best way to get rid of under-eye bags at home is to choose high-quality specialized cosmetics. If you’re having trouble selecting the right products, consult a dermatologist. They will perform a diagnosis and recommend the right solutions for reducing eyelid puffiness.

Some people occasionally need “emergency” beauty help. This is usually related to public appearances and important business meetings. The solution to under-eye bags lies in the use of special patches and plasters.

These patches are applied to the skin of the lower eyelid for a short time, deeply saturating it with certain beneficial substances:

  • Hyaluronic acid;
  • Collagen;
  • Green tea extract, kelp extract, or other plant extracts;
  • L-carnitine;
  • Caffeine;
  • Vitamins;
  • Enzymes;
  • Minerals;
  • Ferments.

The treatment promotes healthy local blood circulation, deeply moisturizes and nourishes the skin, reduces swelling, and provides a gentle lifting effect.

It is permissible to use patches and plasters at home. The main condition is to first select the appropriate product in consultation with a cosmetologist.

Some patients believe that hyaluronic acid does not necessarily need to be administered via injection—that a cream containing it is sufficient. This is not the case.

Unmodified hyaluronate, when added to cosmetic formulations, is unable to penetrate deep layers of the skin. This is due to the size of its molecules. Therefore, such products can only temporarily reduce swelling but have no effect whatsoever on the skin’s aging process. Moreover, using such creams when the skin is dehydrated can lead to even greater dehydration of the skin.

Folk remedies for under-eye bags

Folk remedies are valued by some people for their naturalness and complete safety, but in reality, the latter point is debatable.

Cosmetologists view this type of treatment as merely supplementary, not essential.

While natural remedies are unlikely to completely eliminate lower eyelid fat herniations, they can help reduce the appearance of under-eye bags—preferably if you undergo the treatments daily in the morning.

Try the following methods:

  • Potato “patches.” Potatoes are rich in potassium, niacin, beta-carotene, and other nutrients, which is why they can help you get rid of puffiness under the eyes. Grate a raw potato, add a little milk to the mixture, and apply it to your eyelids. Lie down and leave the mask on for 15 minutes. Rinse off the mask with cool water. A method for very busy people: cut the potato into thin slices and place them on your lower eyelids. Replace the slices with fresh ones every 5 minutes. The swelling will significantly decrease;
  • Washing with ice. To tone, strengthen, and “awaken” the skin, it is recommended to wash your face with ice. As a rule, it is beneficial to treat the skin with frozen herbal decoctions or infusions. Make ice cubes from decoctions of lemon balm, parsley, chamomile, green tea, or St. John’s wort. Run an ice cube along the facial massage lines, paying close attention to the area around the eyes;
  • Massage. Purchase oil-based solutions of vitamins A and E at a pharmacy (you may use the combination product “Aevit”). Apply a thin layer of the liquid to the lower eyelid. Begin gently tapping with your fingertips along the contour from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner. Repeat the movements after 5–7 minutes, then remove any remaining oil with toner or micellar water.

Patients with under-eye bags are also recommended to perform lymphatic drainage facial massage. However, be cautious—incorrect technique can cause negative side effects. If you have any doubts about your ability to perform this massage, consult a professional.

Semi-professional techniques and over-the-counter products

Professional cosmetic procedures can certainly be “replicated” at home.

Home mesotherapy is considered a particularly popular method. To perform it, you will need a mesotherapy cocktail and a mechanical mesoroller. If you are unable to purchase these (as they are typically sold only to cosmetic doctors), use the following products:

  • Hyaluronic acid;
  • Ascorbic acid;
  • Elastin and/or collagen concentrates;
  • Green tea or seaweed bioextract;
  • Amino acids.

Important: Ensure that the pharmaceutical solutions have a light, liquid consistency. Oily substances are not suitable for this method.

Apply the product to clean, dry skin in an even layer. Then roll a mesoroller over the surface, applying light pressure.

Home mesotherapy provides a combination of benefits:

  • Hydration and nourishment;
  • Lifting;
  • Skin tone and texture evening;
  • Lightening of hyperpigmentation;
  • Smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles.

Of course, the final result is not as pronounced or long-lasting as that achieved through mesotherapy performed at an aesthetic medicine clinic. In addition, it is important not to overlook the potential risks of the procedure. Follow all rules of asepsis and antisepsis, work with greater care than ever, and do not apply excessive pressure. Otherwise, there is a risk of side effects.

A mini-device for darsonvalization can serve as a home alternative to microcurrent therapy. When using this method, it is essential to exercise the same caution and not overdo the frequency of treatments. Using darsonval too often can dry out the skin quite severely, leading to the opposite effect—premature aging, swelling, and thinning of the skin.

If you manage to reduce the appearance of under-eye bags at home, you can safely postpone your visit to the doctor.

However, don’t forget that these procedures cannot solve the problem completely. And if nothing seems to help, don’t hesitate to seek professional help.
