How to Prevent Toenail Fungus

how to Prevent Toenail Fungus

The skin on the feet is most commonly affected. The condition begins with itching, burning, flaking, and cracks between the toes.

If necessary measures are not taken in time, the fungus will also affect the nail plate. The nail will become dull, change color (from yellowish to brown), thicken, and begin to crumble.

Under no circumstances should you self-medicate. If you notice any changes in your nails, consult a dermatologist. They will take a scraping sample for analysis to confirm the presence of fungus and identify its type. Only then will they prescribe treatment. After all, nails can change for various reasons: psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, or allergies.

People suffering from onychomycosis often experience low mood and develop an inferiority complex. After all, the fungus spoils the appearance of the nail; in advanced stages, it causes discomfort and pain, making it difficult for people to play sports, and not all shoes are suitable—they have to give up flip-flops and cute open-toed sandals.

The constant presence of the fungus in the body can lead to the development of allergies and other adverse consequences. It is possible to prevent infection with a fungal infection by strengthening the immune system.

Always: Wash your feet thoroughly 1–2 times a day, rinsing them with cool water at the end, and dry them thoroughly, paying special attention to the spaces between your toes. Use antiperspirant creams if you sweat heavily. Before and after going to the pool, apply special antifungal creams, and use nail polish with the same properties on your nails.

Daily cool foot baths help reduce foot sweating and boost the body’s overall resistance. By adding infusions of oak bark, sage, and plantain, you’ll protect yourself from fungal infections. These medicinal herbs effectively heal small cracks and sores, strengthen the skin’s protective barrier, and have a disinfecting effect.

Never wear someone else’s shoes, especially on bare feet; do not walk barefoot in public places (saunas, swimming pools, gyms) barefoot, especially in showers and other damp areas; do not try on shoes without thick socks; do not buy secondhand shoes; do not use porous bath mats (fungi thrive and multiply in them); do not use other people’s towels, and do not buy tight, uncomfortable, or non-breathable shoes.

Treat affected nails with mandarin juice or zest, as well as 3–4% hydrogen peroxide.
